About Bendigo

Like many of the towns across Central Victoria, Bendigo owes its origins as a city to the gold rushes of the nineteenth century.

The gold rush resulted in a massive influx of migrants and Bendigo quickly became a melting pot with its own unique ethnic character. Key groups included the Irish, Cornish, Germans, Americans and the Chinese.

Work first commenced on the magnificent Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1896 and it was officially consecrated in 1977, some eighty years later. The height of the main Sacred Heart Cathedral spire is 86.64 metres (284 feet).

Ride the famous Vintage Talking Tram Tour as it weaves through the historic streets of Bendigo, telling wonderful stories of days gone by.

Today this intriguing cultural heritage gives Bendigo its character and style; the golden past is seamlessly woven into the contemporary threads of this vibrant city.

Experience our new riches as you explore the galleries, museums, attractions, restaurants, cellar doors, shops and events of Bendigo.

A fascinating chapter in our gold story was the arrival of thousands of Chinese pioneers. View rare Chinese textile and ceremonial collections at the Golden Dragon Museum; thought to be home of one of the best collections surviving in the world. Dai Gum San (Chinese Precinct) is currently being developed, to further celebrate this heritage.

See Loong; the oldest imperial Chinese dragon in the world and Sun Loong, alongside culturally significant collections of regalia, furniture, artefacts and genealogy at the Golden Dragon Museum. A visit to the Classical Chinese Gardens is truly tranquil.
